Adventures on Ferries

We rode the ferries on Sunday. Three different trips!

At the hotel we are seeing lots of visitors and I thought I'd offer a suggestion for a unique day exploring the Puget Sound region using the ferry system.

Our adventure started at home in Tacoma. We drove about 40 minutes up Highway 16 to the Southworth terminal near Port Orchard and rode the ferry to West Seattle with a stop at Vashon Island along the way. The $ 12 fare included taking our car for getting around Seattle. West Seattle is about a 15-minute drive from the downtown core where we parked free on the street on Sundays and walked a few blocks to the Space Needle. From 520 feet up you really get a great 360-degree view of the Seattle area. Float planes landing on Lake Union, ferries coming and going from the downtown Seattle dock, cruise ships poised to take on passengers for a trip to Alaska and a bird's-eye perspective of the neighborhood around Seattle Center are some of the highlights. I spotted a large building just east of I-5 near Lake Union that I am curious to learn more about.

After a quick sandwich we started for home and happened by a restaurant that I've been anxious to try called Boat Street Cafe. It is located just a few blocks west of Seattle Center and I've heard great things about the food. From downtown we took Highway 99 along the waterfront, past the stadiums to West Seattle and the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. This time we took the ferry to Vashon Island ($ 27 with auto) and drove from the terminal at the north end of the island to the terminal at the south end and ferried back to Tacoma (no charge) and the Point Defiance terminal near our home.

Today, a guest was heading north to ferry from Mukilteo over to Clinton on Whidbey Island and from that island the Keystone route takes you to Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula.

Another suggestion is to ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, then drive off the islands north end over the Agate Pass bridge to Poulsbo. From there you can drive northwest toward the ocean on the Olympic Peninsula or southeast toward Tacoma. Opportunities abound!
