The weekend adventure began at the Kingston Farmers Market in Kingston, Washington. I like farmers markets and my son likes ferries. This is the perfect setup because the market is in a park at the marina right next to the ferry landing.
"The Kingston Farmers Market is a lively, friendly market located on a beautiful, grassy lawn at Mike Wallace Park at the Port of Kingston Marina." This description is right on the mark. The day we visited a band played from the permanent stage in the park where concerts are held in the summer. Lunch from one of the vendors was the best farmers market food I've eaten. An omelet with bacon, onion and cheese was made to order before my eyes and served folded in quarters on a croissant.
Summer 2011 update: I tried for an encore omelet croissant, but was denied because the vendor was not "in" that week, so we found a very nice place for lunch just up the hill from the ferry landing called The Oak Table Cafe. They feature fresh, from-scratch ingredients and we would all return again next time we visit Kingston.
Our ferry trip to Edmonds aboard the M.V. Puyallup was beautiful. Weather was sunny and warm in the mid-80's and we could see Mt. Rainier in the distance most of the way over.
Lodging for the night was at the Best Western Navigator Inn and Suites in Everett, a professionally managed inn (to me, this means they are truly in the "Hospitality business", not just in business). It is located close to Paine Field and not far from the Mukilteo ferry landing. Paine Field is home to the Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Assembly Plant Tour.
I lived in Everett for 4 years and my favorite restaurant was always the Woodfire Grill at the Everett Marina, the largest marina on the West Coast. I jumped at the chance to visit again and introduced my son to the calamari appetizer. We had a memorable meal and enjoyed the views of the marina.
This time of year the Puget Sound area experiences the lowest tides of the year. For more info on this go to the Harbor Wild Watch web site. After playing on the beach in Edmonds we ferried back to Kingston where we had a nice lunch at The Filling Station before our drive home.
