Bend, Oregon: "outdoor playground of the West"

I had the opportunity to attend a 3-day professional development class in Hospitality Leadership at the Oregon State University - Cascades Campus in Bend. I didn't have much time to play outdoors, but plan to return to take advantage of the many outdoor pursuits available in this beautiful area.

Lodgings at The Oxford Hotel were extraordinary. Open only for a year, this downtown boutique hotel features eclectic decor reflecting the local area. My favorite touches in the room include the luxurious bed and bedding, soaking tub and French press to brew your own locally roasted coffee. 10 Below is the hotel restaurant where I enjoyed a sampler plate made with fresh, local ingredients. One featured beets and Tumalo goat cheese and the other crab and artichoke.

The downtown area is filled with shops and restaurants that made me think I needed more time here. Dilusso Bakery Coffee Cafe located 2 blocks away from the hotel was my breakfast spot for a memorable cup of coffee. As my cup emptied I savored a rich, piney aroma that was new to me. Dinner the first night was at 900 Wall where I found delicious small plates. My favorite was wild shrimp with garlic and arugula served on polenta with bacon. The restaurant just next door to 900 Wall is named Joolz. Based on the meals they catered at our conference including a 4-salad lunch, I can highly recommend them.

The best spot in town for a burger and a beer is Deschutes Brewery where I enjoyed the chance to sample one of their brews not found in stores, Spencers Gold.
